Long ago in the First Age
was the rise of Melkor (Morgoth) in his fortress/dungeon of Angband, who
seeked domination over Arda. To combat this threat and to recover the
Silmarils, the Valar sent an army to seize the jewells by force and cast
down Morgoth. Within this army was a regiment of high-elven lords who
were called Knights of the Valar. The commander of this regiment was
Harluin, greatest of these lords. After the removal of Morgoth, these
lords chose to stay in Middle-Earth and dwell in peace. Little did they
know that Morgoth's greatest servant Sauron has escaped the siege of
Angband and he was to continue his former master's work.
The Second Age saw the first rising of Sauron for the purpose of evil.
He sowed the seeds for the downfall of Numenor by allowing himself to be
captured by the numenoreans and there he ensnared them, telling them to
seize their immortality from the Valar by force. He was caught in the
great downfall of Numenor but his spirit fled back to Mordor in Middle
Earth. He then appeared to the elves in his Maian state and together
they forged the rings of power. However, Sauron forged the One Ring in
secret which would control all others. The three elven rings were
concealed, the seven dwarven rings were consumed in dragon fire and the
nine rings given to the kings of men ensnared them, turning them into
the dreaded Nazgul. The Knights called the Valar to aid them in the
fight against Sauron but they could not, such was their costly war
against Morgoth in the First Age. Instead they bade them to gather the
Free-Peoples to fight as a fellowship under the protection of the Valar.
The Knights gathered dwarves, elves and men to fight with them against
the new "Dark Lord". Sauron then launched an unexpected attack on the
new kingdom of Gondor at Minas Ithil in II 3429 and took it. As a result
Elendil and Gil-Galad took council and the Last Alliance was formed. The
Knights were then split because of the call to arms of all the
Free-Peoples and placed into different armies, according to their race
(Men with Elendil, Isildur and Anarion, and Elves with Gil-Galad).
During the great battle, most of the Knights were slain, such was the
sacrifice to the cause and Forondil, leader of the numenorean soldiers
in the Knights was mortally wounded. Sauron was eventually cast down but
not destroyed for the One Ring lived on. After the battle, Harluin,
leader of the elven Knights consulted the Valar who gave him permission
to send Forondil on a ship to Valinor to be healed of his wounds, such
was his great valour in battle. He sailed to the Undying Lands with
Harluin to be rid of his hurts of the world. Before they left, the Valar
sent to Middle-Earth a mighty gift; a sword they named Valaril (flame of
the Valar; because in the hilt was a small jewell that would light up as
if on fire when the time of need was great) and this sword was to be a
heirloom of Forondil's line so it passed to his son Foronmir, so he
could carry on his father's work with the blessing of the Valar.
For years into the Third Age, this fellowship of Knights waned and the
One Ring was now lost to all. Their only great deed in the Third Age, up
until the Ring was found again, was their aid to the Dunedain in the
North against the Witch King of Angmar, from III 1300 to III 1975, who
was eventually driven from those lands. Then came dark years and those
that were originally in the fellowship were either slain in battle, died
from old age (dwarves and men) or sailed to Valinor (elves). Two
thousand years into the Third Age and Anarmir was the only remaining
Knight. The later part of the Third Age saw the second rise of Sauron,
who is now actively searching for the One. The year is now III 3018 and
Eriador is now not safe. Spies of the enemy have returned and the Nazgul
are looking for "Baggins" who now holds the One. Balandil, son of
Valamir and descendant of Forondil (but not the last), has heard of this
stirring and now once again gathers the Free-Peoples to join in
fellowship one last time to fight against sauron under the banner of the
Knights of the Valar. Balandil is now in Eriador, searching for Elves of
Rivendell, Dwarves from the north, the last remanents of the Dunedain
and even Hobbits whose short stature fools many. Together, we will help
turn the tide against Sauron. |
